Anders now weighs just under 10lbs 60z. Just three weeks ago he languished around the 10 percentile for weight and height at 8lbs 9oz. Now, he is in the 50 percentile for weight, 75 percentile for height, and 90 percentile for head circumference.
He was taken off his medications today. He only takes a multivitamin now.
Anders had blood drawn to test his hemoglobin, electrolytes, and perhaps blood density (if that's a thing?) He handles needles quite well. Anders cried a bit at first, but then was a real trooper. He's been poked, prodded and pricked so many times that he has built up a high tolerance for pain.
They switched the formula to a more preemie specific mix.
Things started inauspiciously. After checking in and taking a seat in the waiting room, one receptionist started packing up her purse, then the other one did the same and turned off the lights in their office, then they both left work without explanation. I was about 3 minutes from wandering the halls with Anders when we were called back. I had this exchange with the woman who called us back and weighed Anders,
"Is this your first child?"
"Yes."
"He looks just like you. Do you get that a lot?"
"Well, sometimes. I'm starting to see it more now. I suppose it goes in phases, sometimes he will look more like me, sometimes more like my wife."
"No. He looks like you."
"Yeah, you're probably right."
"I have two kids. One looks like my husband and one like me. My first one always looked like my husband, never looked a bit like me."
So there you have it from the nursing assistant at Columbus Nationwide Hospital, Anders looks like me.
Driving home was no fun. We hit rush hour, a driving rain storm, and a jackass in a huge SUV almost shot across 2 lanes of traffic and sideswiped the Buick right in front of me. Fortunately, he saw the Buick and fortunately I know that the stretch from I-70 to Lancaster is a jackass-heavy stretch of highway so I would have been able to stop in time if something happened. I gave a wide berth to the jackasses all around me. I know that 2 lane highways are the most dangerous by the numbers, but I have always had my most terrifying driving experiences on pseudo interstates (4 lane roads with cross traffic and people turning on the roads without benefit of an exit ramp coupled with people driving at freeway speed) like US 33 on this stretch, US 50 in WV, US 169 in MN, etc...
On a lighter note, I did very much enjoy the continuous Christmas music on 93.3 FM--Columbus's Christmas Station. The all-Christmas station hasn't hit SE Ohio yet.
